Theyyam

Theyyam, a ritualistic dance from North Malabar, embodies divine energy and transcends caste and religious boundaries. Rooted in ancient traditions, it is performed primarily by Malayan and Vannan communities in Kannur, Kasargod, Wayanad, and parts of Karnataka. Over 400 Theyyams honor deities, warriors, and spirits, with major forms like Muchilottu Bhagavathy and Kathivannur Veeran. Performers undergo rigorous preparation (Vrutham) and don elaborate costumes with symbolic headgear, makeup, and ornaments. The season runs from October to May, with grand performances (Kaliyattam) in temples. Theyyam remains a vibrant cultural heritage, blending art, devotion, and community pride. It has gained recognition as an important part of Kerala's intangible heritage, showcasing the region's rich cultural diversity.
