Ramakkalmedu

Ramakkalmedu, Asia's windiest hill station, is nestled in the ridges of the Western Ghats and lies in the Idukki district about 40 km from Thekkady. The rolling green hills, fresh mountain air, and strong winds of this cool retreat in the spread-out ranges of the Western Ghats are a great treat for the eyes and the body.

This peaceful resort received its name from the impressions of footprints on the rocks, which are thought to be the footprints of Lord Rama. One of the episodes of the Ramayana is that Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, went to the hills of Ramakkalmedu while searching for his wife, Sita. The land, which was made holy by his presence, was thus named Ramakkalmedu, meaning "the place of Rama's footprints."

From the mountains, visitors can see the beautiful sights of the villages of the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu spreading out beneath them. The topographic scenery is decorated with the presence of a 300-metre-high pillar-like rock formation that faces the east direction. The wind farms run by the Kerala Government in this area, which is perpetually subjected to heavy winds, are generating more than 10.5 MW of energy and thus making the area both beautiful and essential.

Ramakkalmedu is full of interesting things to do and see, among which the most famous is the highest Kuravan and Kurathi statue illustrating a tribal couple and their child looking at the faraway horizon thoughtfully. This resurrects the past and the deep-rooted bond of the region with the natural world. Other such natural rocks like Turtle Rock and Frog Rock formed by the wind and time, are there for the visitors to discover as well.

In case you are after some action or simply peace, Ramakkalmedu is equipped with the offer for both and more. The trek along its windy hillside will surely be an adrenaline rush as well as a lovely opportunity to get lost in the company of unspoiled nature. The top offers the best vantage point to look over Kambam village in Tamil Nadu, a flawless image captured by the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats.

The huge Shankurandampara Rock at Puttadi is yet another place of spectacular sights of the rich and extensive Ramakkalmedu terrain that you can visit on your trip from Munnar to Thekkady.

Nightfall brings with it a completely different sort of charm. The setting sun dressing the hills in golden rays and the slightest of breezes, which carries the whispered stories, seem to complement each other. Every person who visits Ramakkalmedu perceives it in a different manner—the place hits a different chord in every heart.

Here, with the ancient stones and the never-ending winds, one gets to experience the feeling of being closely connected—an association with nature, with myth, and with the ageless spirit of the land. Ramakkalmedu is far from being just a stopover on your way to somewhere else; rather, it is a place where the myth, the beauty, and the serenity meet.
