Muzhappilangad Beach

Along the Malabar Coast, Muzhappilangad Beach stretches out in a very beautiful way and is a very rare beach which is perfect for both an adventurous and a calm holiday. Situated in Kannur, just 7 km from Thalassery, it is known as the only drive-in beach of Kerala, thus making it a repulsive stretch of 4 km where people can drive along the hard sand while enjoying the sea air - be it a motorbike or in a car.

The beach is surrounded by natural black rocks, which protect it from the strong ocean currents, so the water is safe for swimming, and therefore it is a real swimming paradise. Besides, these rocks provide a secure shelter for migratory birds, thus transforming the area into a seasonal avifauna observation station, especially during winter when it sees 30 species visiting its shores.

With its moderate waves, clean environment, golden sunsets, and a children’s park at the beach, Muzhappilangad attracts not only the families but the tourists as well. The beach, in fact, provides a number of exciting adventure activities for thrill lovers, such as water sports, power boating, catamaran riding, parasailing, paragliding, and even microlight flights. The reason for the warmth coming at low tide is that it gives a chance to the visitors to cross over to Dharmadam Island, a small beautiful green island just off the coast, on foot.

Enjoying the authentic Malabar cuisine served at the numerous beachside shacks is a must when you are at Muzhappilangad. Built upon the traditions of Persia, Portugal, and Arab, Malabar food is a treat to all the senses, which balances sweet, sour as well as spicy flavors with extreme finesse. There is no other dining experience as memorable as the view while having the freshest seafood- especially the blue mussels found on the rocks nearby-cooked in delicious herbs, spices, and coconut milk.

Every April the beach is full of life due to the colorful Muzhappilangad Beach Festival, a festival of culture, cuisine, and adventure. Visitors can spend their time watching the exciting car and bike stunts on the sand with the addition of performances and local festivities.

The beach is clean and in good condition and is full of unexpected things that will entertain you. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie, wish to relax, or just want to watch the sun set over the Arabian Sea, you will find Muzhappilangad Beach has something for you.
