Munnar

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Idukki district, Munnar is a quiet hill station famous for its foggy valleys and vast tea plantations. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, this magical place has stunning views, fresh mountain air, and a peaceful retreat in nature. Hills covered with green trees, waterfalls, and valleys full of fog are just some of the reasons why Munnar is a paradise for those who want to combine nature and peace.

The Land of the Three Rivers

The name Munnar comes from the three rivers Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala that meet here, thus creating a perfect place for great scenic beauty. The Muthuvan tribe is the one that remained the occupants of the region for a long time, and their relation with nature is still a big part of Munnar’s culture. In the 19th century, the Europeans saw the bright future in the area, and A.H. Sharp planted the first tea garden in 1880 by taking around 50 acres of land. At present, the long lines of tea gardens are the face of Munnar that make it a beautiful and soft green land, which appeals to every tourist.

Tea Heritage and Museums

The Tea Museum at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea keeps the memory of Munnar’s plantations through its old relics, vintage machines, and photographic records. The museum is the story of the past times told through the journey of tea in the region, and a curious peek into the life of the first settlers and workers of the hill station, who are the pioneers of present-day Munnar.

Flora, Fauna, and Scenic Wonders

Munnar’s attractive nature is not limited to the production of tea. The place is also known for the Neelakurinji, an extremely rare flower, which comes into bloom only once in twelve years, thus covering the mountains with blue during the Kurinji period. Eravikulam National Park, which occupies an area of 97 sq. km, is where the rare Nilgiri Tahr lives and gives the opportunity for a stunning view of the flowering Kurinji. The Anamudi Peak, which is the highest one in South India with a height of more than 2,700 meters, is one of the reasons that make Munnar irresistible to trekkers and lovers of nature.

The other must-sees are Mattupetty Dam, which offers boating services, the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project dairy farm; and Pallivasal, the place where Kerala’s first hydroelectric project was set up. While Chinnakanal Waterfalls and Anayirangal Dam are making the perfect scenes for postcards, being surrounded by tea plantations and evergreen forests, Top Station is giving a breathtaking and wide view of the Western Ghats that could never be forgotten.

A Timeless Retreat

In Munnar, you will find peace and quiet among the fog-covered hills, the calm mountain winds, and green nature, which all work as a natural healer for your soul. Whatever you do there visiting tea estates, going on a trek and watching the rare Neelakurinji blossom you will find that your time in Munnar is simply magical, a peaceful getaway to the core of Kerala’s stunning nature.
