Among the largest and most intact forts in Kerala, Bekal Fort is situated in the Kasaragod district of Kerala. This 17th-century hilltop fortress overlooking the Arabian Sea is nothing less than an exciting walk back to the times of Kerala's history. Its tactical location, wonderful views of the sea, and the adjoining unspoiled beach are enough to lure in any kind of tourist: history buffs, nature lovers, and travelers looking for a serene place.
Historical Significance
Built in the middle of the 17th century by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty, Bekal Fort was intended to keep enemies at bay and ensure the safe running of the spice trade. After a long time, it was controlled by Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and eventually the British East India Company. The natural fortifications of the cliff on which the fort stands made it ideal for watchfulness of sea vessels and therefore demonstrate the military genius of the time.
Architectural Highlights
Covering an area of more than 40 acres, Bekal Fort is remarkable for its keyhole-shaped design, a mix of Indian and Islamic architectural styles.
Walls and Bastions: High red laterite stone walls, in some places reaching 12 meters, are strengthened by armoured fortifications that are perfect vantage points from which one can view the sea as far as the eye can see. The observation tower placed on the largest bastion faces the Arabian Sea.
Water Tank and Tunnels: The water tank in the fort can be reached by stairs, and the fort also has a handful of underground passages, which were historically used as escape routes in times of siege.
Observation Tower: The tower in the middle not only invites a look, but also offers a full 360-degree view of the sea, the beaches, and the verdure. Long ago it was used to spot incoming ships and to coordinate defenses.
Scenic Beauty
Bekal Fort's location adds to its attractiveness, featuring blue seas, immaculate sandy beaches, and verdant coasts. Picnics, casual walks, and quiet reflection are some of the activities available at Bekal Beach that lies just next to the fort. The sea meeting the shore from the fort's raised points is a spectacular sight, especially at sunrise and sunset.
